Reading - Dariana, Sohum, Abra, and Nicolette
This week in reading we have read some very interesting stories. We read the The Real Story of Stone Soup. We are doing readers' theater with different versions of Stone Soup. We are reading a lot of Folktales, which are similar to fairy tales. The lessons in the stories this week were Be careful what you say, do not brag, and treat others fairly. The stories Mrs. McLelland gave us to read are very interesting! Reading this week has been terrific!
Writing - Ellen, Lilie, Angel, and Natalie
This week our class wrote a diary entry on being a homesteader kid. A homesteader is someone who lived in the 1800s that traveled out west. We wrote descriptive entries based on 1 day in the life. We were writing about what had happening to us before. Our writing had to be realistic. Our class learned about the real life of a homesteader and it was very interesting.
Math- Daruis, Anneliese, Nick, and Ronit
This month we designed a math carnival. The carnival has booths, prizes, and food or fun things. We had to figure how much money our total expenses were. We had a limit of $200.00. Our class had to figure out how many sq. meters the booths and carnival covered.
Also, we learned Distributive Property this month which helps when you don’t know big multiplication tables. You split 1 factor into 2 numbers.
In the Leukemia & Lymphoma fundraiser we donated money to help people in need. Our goal was $220.00 and we raised exactly $300.00 so we were gold champions. If we raise $100 - $199.99 we would get a bronze banner. If we collect $200.00 - $299.99 we get a silver banner and if we collect $300.00 or more we get a gold banner.
Social Studies/Writing - Camden, Tommy, and Katrina
In our writing/ social studies unit we are making postcards to friends and families in different communities. First we wrote our rough draft of the postcard. Then we used Printshop to design the front of the postcard. We made the town name to look very fancy. After that, we chose a community picture for the background. Then we took a picture of ourselves so we could put ourselves in the postcard. Next, we went into Background Burner to take the background out of the pictures that each of us took. Finally, we put ourselves in the picture that represented our town. I wonder what we will be writing next!:)
Science- Abigail, Claire, Michael, and Christopher
Science is a really fun part of school. We went to an assembly about simple machines. It was called Smarty Pants. It was very funny but educating. All of the simple machines were made out of balloons. At the end of the show we got to trap Mrs. Mau (the mouse).
In the class, we did some experiments using simple machines. We learned that if you use a simple machine, it would take less force, but more time. If you used your hands, it would take more force and less time. We call this a TRADEOFF. On the computers we did a fun game called Edheads. In this game, you go into different rooms and try to find simple machines. After you found the simple machines, it asks you about the simple machine- what kind it is and what its purpose is. That is what we did in science this week!
